The true heart and soul of Silicon Valley, Palo Alto is an affluent city home to many startups, Stanford University, and a vibrant downtown. The start-up minded culture originates from its beginnings as a charter city, where the residents wished to establish their own laws rather than abide by state and regional laws. The booming tech scene is largely driven by Stanford University's campus, which produces great minds year after year (ie the founders of Google, Elon Musk, and Jerry Yang among others). Aside from its downtown, the area is very suburban and made up of different homogenous neighborhoods. Residents appreciate the quiet, tree-lined streets, well-maintained homes, great weather, amenities and top-tier schools. Housing ranges from subsidized to mansions, and everything in between. There is something for everyone, though all residents certainly pay a premium to live here.
Commute
While you'll probably want a car to get around, Palo Alto is rated among the most bicycle-friendly cities in the country. The CalTain station in downtown makes it easy to get to and from San Francisco and other Silicon Valley cities.

The downtown area is centered around tree-lined University Avenue and offers plenty of restaurants, high-end shopping, and services. Stop for a drink at The Old Pro, a prime college bar with startup offices on the second floor. Young people from all over Silicon Valley appreciate this lively, walkable, upscale downtown. Other noteworthy spots: the Palo Alto Farmer's Market hosted on Saturdays during the Summer, Evvia for delicious Greek fare, and the Baylands Nature Preserve for hiking, jogging, and biking.
