The original concept of San Mateo was as a designated spot for wealthy San Franciscans to visit their summer homes in the 1800's. Today it is a vast, suburban Silicon Valley city with ethnically and economically diverse residents. Several companies headquarters are housed here, including Franklin Templeton Investments, NetSuite, and Sony. Unlike other Silicon Valley neighborhoods, San Mateo has a great downtown with a vibrant walkable area featuring tons of dining, a nightlife scene, and a cinema. Residents appreciate the excellent schools here, two of which are immersive language schools, teaching both Spanish and Cantonese. Though housing tends to be on the higher end of the pricing scale, there are still entry level spaces and apartment complexes present.
Commute
Three local CalTrain stations make it easy to commute into San Francisco, Palo Alto, Redwood City, and San Jose. Buses run throughout the area but are hard to come by and further from main roads, so as with other Silicon Valley cities, having a car is ideal for local transport
