TimeOut published its list of the World's Coolest Neighborhoods for fun, food, culture and community based on a poll of 20,000 city-dwellers and interviews of local experts, and unsurprisingly California has three trendy locales highlighted.
Coming in at #6 is San Diego's Barrio Logan, a historic hotbed of Mexican American culture famous for its numerous colorful street murals. Locals love Chicano Park, itself a cause of community activism, and Logan Avenue, the parade route for lowriders during neighborhood gatherings and home of former warehouses converted into galleries, taquerias and craft breweries. You will find many students from the nearby Woodbury School of Architecture partaking in the thriving art scene.
Los Angeles's #21 winner is ultra-hip Silverlake, perfectly located on the scenic hills between Downtown LA and Hollywood and where world-famous Sunset and Santa Monica Boulevards converge. It's aptly named after an urban reservoir oasis in sunny and dry SoCal. In recent decades, the neighborhood began shedding its urban grim and is now home to celebrities, creatives, professionals, and an ever-increasing number of families. Gone are some of the gay bars and clubs, replaced by designer cafes, boutiques and restaurants.
San Francisco is represented by Dogpatch, grabbing the #36 spot. A former shipyard and industrial area on Bay waterfront, this neighborhood's scenic vistas, historic homes and mass transit have stimulated some of the most exciting new development projects. In particular the Pier70 project is nationally renowned for its ambitious historic restoration, evidenced by the newly opened and ultra-chic Restoration Hardware now more famous for its restaurant than its furnishings.
