Most people take their local businesses for granted. In fact, stores and restaurants play an important role in your quality of life.
A 2018 University of Washington analysis of data from Oakland the found that higher level of commercial activity may actually deter criminal behavior in denser urban communities. If you're a homeowner, the vibrancy of your local retail area has a direct impact on your home value. CivicEconomics found that neighborhoods with thriving independent businesses saw home values outperform citywide markets by 50 percent in its over 14-year study period.
So how do we support local businesses? New York Times suggest the following:
Participate in Community Efforts. Plan and attend local events at local marketplaces.
